Sugar Hand & Body Scrub

Every year, I get something which I have (not-so-fondly) dubbed November Hands. Come November 1, without fail, my hands get exceedingly chapped. My fingers crack, and my cuticles turn leathery and peel. I’m pretty sure in a world with no calendars, I would be able to tell when November began based solely on the state of my hands. In years past, no matter how much water I drank, or moisturizer I applied, I could never seem to curb this clockwork dryness of mine.

So, this past November I decided to try something different: Sugar scrub.

And it worked! I made a big batch and kept a pot of it in our bathroom. Every night I would scrub my hands with it, and that once-a-day scrub completely prevented my November Hands. So, sorry if you were counting on me to tell you when November starts… I probably can’t anymore!

I love this sugar scrub because it’s not overly greasy, but still very moisturizing, it’s cheaper than most hand creams, it leaves your hands (or wherever you use it!) super soft, and can be as scented or unscented as you’d like. It’s so nice to have around to combat dry winter skin, and makes a great homemade gift!

So, here’s how you make it.

What you’ll need (this makes 3-4 cups of scrub):

  • 1 cup liquid coconut oil (it doesn’t need to be hot, just liquid)
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup coarse salt (optional, but gives you extra scrubbing power!)
  • 1 or 2 teaspoons essential oil (optional)
  • Container for storage

What to do:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl. If you’d like your scrub to be more wet or dry than what the recipe gives you, just add more oil or sugar.
  2. Transfer mixture to an airtight container. I used these Kinetic GoGreen Glassworks 12 Piece Glass Canning jar Set, 18oz Each 56106, which are great! I’ve always been able to find them sold individually at Home Goods or TJ Maxx. If you’re planning on keeping your scrub in the shower, you might want a plastic container like these: Clear PET Plastic (BPA Free) Refillable Low Profile Jar – 8 oz (6 pack) + Spatulas and Labels.
  3. Get scrubbing!

My favorite scents:

  • Lemon + lemongrass
  • Orange + peppermint
  • Grapefruit + bergamot
  • Peppermint + vanilla
  • Lavendar + lemon
